About Walter Guity
Born and raised in New York City, I graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in Psychology. My journey in chess began at the age of 11, when my math teacher introduced me to the game. Since then, chess has not only been a passion but a powerful tool for building self-esteem, sharpening mental focus, and unlocking countless opportunities—from traveling to meeting incredible people.
With nearly a decade of experience coaching chess players of all ages and skill levels (including both of my daughters!), I've had the privilege of teaching students in elementary schools across Washington state throughout my college years and early twenties.
My coaching experience spans from guiding beginners through the basics of piece movement to helping advanced players master complex tactics and checkmate patterns. I've also led intensive chess camps in Washington and California, where I helped students develop their skills and deepen their love for the game.
My true passion lies in teaching underrepresented groups and spreading the beauty of chess. The lessons the game imparts—strategy, patience, and critical thinking—are invaluable, and I remain deeply motivated to inspire the next generation through this incredible game.

Why Chess?
Analytical Thinking: Chess requires players to analyze positions, anticipate opponent moves, and strategize their own. This sharpens analytical thinking skills, which are invaluable in various aspects of life.
Spatial Reasoning: Understanding the movement of pieces on the chessboard enhances spatial reasoning abilities, which are crucial in fields like mathematics, engineering, and architecture.
Pattern Recognition: Recognizing patterns and themes within the game is essential for success in chess. This skill translates to recognizing patterns in other areas of life, aiding in problem-solving and decision-making.
Self-Confidence: As players improve their skills and win games, they gain confidence in their abilities. This self-assurance extends beyond the chessboard and can positively impact other areas of life.
Accessible Learning: Chess is simple to learn, yet offers endless depth. This accessibility makes it an ideal activity for people of all ages and backgrounds, providing opportunities for lifelong learning and enjoyment.
Life Lessons: The planning, foresight, and understanding of consequences inherent in chess gameplay mirror real-life situations. Through chess, young people learn valuable life lessons such as patience, perseverance, and the importance of thinking ahead.
In essence, chess is more than just a game; it's a tool for intellectual growth, character development, and enjoyment that can benefit individuals of all ages.
“I have come to the personal conclusion that while all artists are not chess players, all chess players are artists.”
