Coach Walter has a great passion for the game of chess. He not only provides excellent game analysis, kind encouragement, but understands how to communicate the psychological aspects of the game of Kings.

I think the biggest breakthrough for my son this year was when Coach Walter encouraged him to ignore his opponent’s ratings and play his best game. Walter’s thoughtful approach to coaching extends way beyond the game of chess. He’s an excellent mentor to my son. Highly recommend!!!

Walter came to us by recommendation and we are so grateful! My son loves his weekly chess club with “Mr. Walter” so much; he waits all week for Friday to come. Walter is so kind and funny with the kids. He chooses different ways to teach strategies and explains the outcomes of the various moves they could have made. My son’s chess game and overall strategic thinking skills have improved so much just in the few months we’ve been working with him. From all the way in Michigan, thank you for helping my son “level up” and feel comfortable and confident in his game.

Our family came into contact with Walter through another company and my son absolutely fell in love with his lessons. In fact, when a different instructor replaced him, we tracked Walter down for private lessons. Walter's lessons have become a highlight of the week for Timmy. I'm impressed as a parent by his ability to present the material to young children in a manner that they can understand, and how gentle and non-judgmental he is. He builds confidence in young students and gives them the positive feedback they need to keep going. I was so impressed with his teaching ability I have recommended him to fellow parents at my son's new school and I continue to recommend him. If you want your child to have strong playing skills, confidence and joy in the game, Walter is your best choice for an instructor.

Hiring Walter to be my Chess Coach during the pandemic was one of the best decisions I ever made. As a busy executive, I am always looking for ways to decompress. I had always had the dream of learning to play chess, but never took the time, so this was perfect for me. I started not knowing the names of the different pieces, eventually being able to employ strategies and attacks. We met weekly and it was part chess lesson, part therapy. My ultimate accomplishment? Beating my sister, who considers herself a strong chess player, at Chess. It was priceless. I now play regularly online to destress, play with my nieces and nephews and have taught others how to play. It has really brought my family together, young and old, despite the generational language differences.

My son has been taking small-group, virtual chess lessons with Mr. Guity. My son is a beginner level player. He has attended approximately 6 weeks of classes. During this time, he has learned terminology, technique and rules. My son enjoys the lessons and looks forward to them every week. We are grateful that we have found a teacher who has sparked a love for the game in my son.

My son has been working with Walter over the past two years. We started during the pandemic when my son was in remote schooling. As an instructional coach for Seattle Public Schools, I was blown away by Walter's teaching skills. I often used his classes as examples for my own teachers! He is warm, welcoming, engaging, and provides immediate feedback! My kiddo has struggled with paying attention and sometimes is disrespectful in school and Walter does a great job redirecting Amare in a warm but firm manner. Beyond just the actual teaching of chess he incorporates how chess is much like life. We both have learned valuable lessons about how we can see the bigger picture, evaluate our different options and make the best decisions. Walter helps Amare see the parallels. We feel blessed to have met such an incredible teacher! I couldn't recommend Walter more. He's been such a role model in my son's life.”

“My son has been taking chess lessons from Walter for over a year, and I have been so impressed by Walter's teaching. My kid is now a much better chess player than I am! Walter is patient and kind, and the way he engages kids with chess games not only teaches them lessons about chess, about patience and perseverance, but he also makes their time spent together fun! My child has ADHD, and Walter has been a wonderful teacher for him, helping him through times when he's extra wiggly, impatient, or distracted, with incredible patience and an understanding of his needs. As a person who specializes in child health and development, I can tell you that Walter is one of the best. We couldn't have asked for a better teacher-- I highly recommend him!”

  • Brittany (Mother)

Walter is AMAZING! He connected quickly with my son (7 years old) and is an excellent and patient teacher. I would highly recommend him for lessons for your child too!!

  • Jessica (Mother) and Eddie (Son

I am impressed with Walter connects with the kids right away and urges them to compete and strive to do their best. They talk about class afterwards and have played online without him many times. I am so happy to have found him as a teacher for my son, although I have no idea how to play this wonderful game”

“I would give Walter 5 Stars. He is a great teacher. He gives us methods to use and teaches us competition. I really like the class and would highly recommend other kids take lessons from him!”

    Eddie – age 9.

My son loves learning from Mr. Guity! He's waiting for his chess lessons every week. He is challenged every time, I've seen he's improved his technique during these months that Walter became his teacher and I love to see that he enjoys it.

My daughter, Alexandra (Age 10) has been taking individual lessons with Walter for the last few months. Walter's friendly and engaging demeanor has been successful in captivating her attention and helping my usually shy daughter be interested in the game. His ability to explain concepts well and clearly has improved my daughter's skills immensely. Without my prompting, I find Alexandra practicing chess in her spare time. I am extremely grateful for Walter's patience, his willingness to accommodate our busy schedule, and his commitment to making chess interesting & fun!
